The Meyer Residence

The starting point for the project was the selection of a Kodo Corten outdoor fireplace from the Canadian manufacturer Paloform. The next obvious move was to bookend the fire feature with short seat walls, which we veneered with tumbled San Miguel stone from Telluride, whose colors beautifully complemented the rustic look of the corten fire feature. We capped the walls with a light Arizona Buff flagstone. Subtle downlighting by Unique Lighting was hidden under the wall caps for evening mood lighting, and a solid milled brass-and-copper fixture from Auroralight was used to spotlight the fireplace.

For the decorative screening, we chose to contrast the warmth and elegance of Ipe wood with bronze powder-coated steel for the posts. Due to the necessary span of the pergola, we chose Alaskan Yellow Cedar glulams for the project, which we stained with a linseed-based stain from Armstrong Clark. Retractable cloth panels from Shade Tree Canopies were installed between the pergola joists to allow full adjustability of the desired shade level. A beautiful blue Sunbrella awning-grade fabric was chosen for the panels.
